AUTUMN'S PROMISE

The ash tree’s leaves in my front yard

After Summer became old and tired

Soon wore the glorious raiment

Of luminescent gold – Autumn’s repayment

But when the winds did shriek and moan

His crown of gold became bestrown

His branches bare, the bowers deposed

And the twig-wrought nests of birds exposed

And in my back yard – this is true!

My little gum tree's leaves turn blue

(Though he also wears oranges, reds and golds,

His azure tones my attention holds)

And now the leaves upon my lawn

Insist that Autumn will soon be gone

But Winter’s snows, they promise, bring

That wondrous season known as Spring
