BOBCAT

I stop the car and stare
at the face of curiosity
The little bobcat stares right back
And sees the same in me

No fear in him-this is his place
As I, interloper, know

And finally he turns and trots
Bob-tail held high and proud
while I admire his youthful spots
And say so, right out loud.

But now the spell is broken
By my foolish utterance:
And he's ambled away
With but one backward glance

And I just gaze
In wonder
At the meadow,
Now empty
Except for placid cows
Noses glued to the ground-
Who paid no attention
At all.
