It was twilight yet
The sun had set
and the hills glowed gently gold against a sky of midnight blue
colors splashed across the western sky;
the clouds aflame, crimson rays leapt
in bands of light,
a circle of fiery beams.
I was caught up, too weak to tear myself away
from the beauty
and so I walked backwards
until the last of the light
failed, falling beneath the horizon,
a lone eucalyptus backlit
until it too went black
