THE     GANDER

There he flies again,
up and down the river
from the hills toward the bay

seeks his mate he does;
I hear his mournful cry
he does this every day

steadfast describes him,
his search unending
for his mate who dead, lay

two big vultures came--
the hunter never claimed her--
and she was their prey

he will not mate again
he'll fly along the river
from the hills to the bay

always he will seek her
(geese know how to love!)
and his heart will never stray

I heard his desperate call
and, aching for his heartbreak
I cried for him today.
