For eons I have stood here
Washed by the waves
And rising tides that try to rip me loose from my mooring
Yet I remain
For I must as long
As I give shelter
To the barnacles at my base
Many storms have I weathered
And many more shall flay me
Ere I crumble into the surf;
This last one tore my underpinning away
How I mourned that loss of footing
Until I saw the tidepool left in its place
A haven created from my body
For soft-bodied sea creatures
Only a rock am I
But even I can foster life
And be needed
